Crashing, Rolling and High Speed

I have a fantastic job that provides me fantastic training.  No need to go into great detail on this post, but below are some brief descriptions of techniques we learned on the track with commentary and video from our car.  The commentary is often the most hilarious component....

They started the day by issuing helmets, briefing us on how to brace in a roll over and putting us in a super reinforced Jeep Cherokee, which they promptly rolled over using a tow strap and a Humvee.  The logistics of getting out of this situation without crumpling onto your seat mate were discussed and practiced.

Close Proximity & Formation Driving
  • There are no words.  It felt like Bangladesh traffic.  I totally get it now.  The only impact we had was my boss tapping my nose.  Not bad!

The second morning we did cold laps.  This was a timed event for the fastest time over three laps (switching drivers after parking in a tiny box at high speeds of braking).  We won at 7 minutes flat!  Way to go Team Gary!

Getting your PIT on.  So this is a felony for a civilian to use in all 50 states.  That being said, we learn it as an escape or avoidance technique when someone is trying to box us in and get us to stop.  PIT is a precision immobilization technique.

Ramming is when there is no other route of escape and your have to go through it to get out.  The videos below show it from inside the car and outside.  Good stuff!

The best part was the off road recovery drill.  This is where you pretend to be asleep and when you wake up the vehicle is off the road at a high speed and you have to recover.  There is a lot of commentary.....

The next best thing was a down driver drill.  This is where the driver becomes unable to operate a vehicle, think medical, etc., and the passenger has to take control.  We don't have any video because all passengers are involved in the recovery of the vehicle and restraining the driver in case they come to.

All in all is was a great couple of days.  Only one guy hurled and a fun time was had by all.  Super thankful for these moments.
